SkyNews 6 took aerials of these horses stranded east of Henryetta.TULSA, Oklahoma -The Red Cross is setting up a shelter in Henryetta for residents displaced by flood waters. They estimate that 200 people have left their homes because of the flooding in Henryetta and nearby Dewar.
The shelter has been moved to Dewar, according to Tulsa Region Red Cross representative Donita Quesnel.
It is now at the Dewar Baptist Church, 507 6th Street.
Heavy rainfall is also causing some road closures in eastern and northeastern Oklahoma. Along Interstate 40, from Oklahoma City to Henryetta, between 5 to 8 inches of rain fell. Heavy flooding in Henryetta has been reported.
Flash flood warnings have been extended until 8 p.m. Saturday for the following counties:
- Okfuskee
- Okmulgee
- Muskogee
- Pittsburg
- Le Flore
- Latimer
- Haskell
- McIntosh
The Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office reported earlier in the day that residents in Dewar and Henryetta have been forced from their homes by the flash flooding.
Temporary shelters were set up for Dewar residents at the City Hall: 105 North Broadway Street. Henryetta residents were also being housed at the First Methodist Church, 1212 Lake Road.
Flooding of low lying areas will likely continue. No injuries have been reported at this time.
Road closures, according to ODOT:
- Okmulgee County: Highway 75 is closed at 4th Street.
- Okfuskee County: Highway 48 is closed one mile south of Interstate 40 near Okemah.
- Nowata County: Highway 10 east of Lenapah remains closed.
Some other areas that may experience flash flooding include Okmulgee, Council Hill, Morris, Okfuskee, Okmulgee State Park and Welty.
Remember, flooding conditions can be deadly. Most flood-related deaths take place in automobiles.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the road. It only takes two feet of rushing water to carry away most SUVS and pickups. Turn around - don't drown.
